Island Bay

Island Bay is a great dive site…yes another one. You have a mix of seaweed covered rocky reefs (with eels hidden in the cracks) to 10 meter stands of bull kelp. Round the back of Taputeranga Island, the name given to the Marine reserve, is also fantastic in flat seas.
Enter either by the Island bay marine education center or the car park by the “Welcome to Island Bay” sign. A weedy bottom gives way to sand at about 10m…look out for sting ray and skate. If you head for the eastern side of the Island you will come across a forest of giant kelp…a must see on a good vis day!
